Dear Parents,
I’ve have had some inquiries from parents as to whether their children should be receiving homework. Current research shows that an excess of homework (especially during primary years) can affect academic progress negatively, so it is important to us to make sure that what we are expecting from your child is developmentally appropriate.
Current researchers suggests that a healthy expectation for homework is 10-15 minutes of reading per night, accompanied by any academic areas in which your child needs further reinforcement, such as math facts, sight word practice or make-up work. This means that other than the regular 10-15 minutes of reading per night, homework is individualized based on the personal needs of each student. In short, unless I notice a need and send home a communication or call with a concern, please adhere to the 10-15 minutes a night recommendation. You are welcome to do more than that, but it is not required. We’ll be monitoring your child’s progress and let you know of any concerns that we have as they arise.
Thank you for your support and for helping your child achieve their best!
